Black Hand Letter Demands
Twenty-Five Dollars Be Placed at Spot Near I. C.
Depot
Earnest Maas the tailor
received a threatening letter last Saturday morning
demanding that he place the sum of twenty-five dollars
at a designated spot near the I. C. passenger
depot. This
letter was found by Mr. Maas in his tailor shop in the
Goldheim building Saturday morning when he opened up.
The letter went on to say that Mr. Maas had better carry
out the instruction of the letter, for if he didn't four
bloodhounds would be placed on his trail and he would be
sorry if he didn't do as he was bid. The writer was
evidently not particular about describing the place
where the money was to be left as the letter stated it
was to be placed in a box under a red stone that would
be found 20 yards west and 5 yards east of the
depot.
Sheriff H. J. Cummings has
this letter in charge and informed a Review reporter
that it was his opinion that the letter was written by
some young person who wished to play a joke on Mr. Maas.
We cannot understand why anyone would care to make
themselves liable to such a serious offense when the
penalty means a heavy fine and a term in the
penitentiary. Denison Review
